(Click on picture to enlarge) The 1011th members along with legislators from the Independence area pictured above with the Governor, were successful in obtaining designation through the Kansas Legislature for a portion of U.S. Highway 160 near Independence as a memorial highway for our army unit. This has been an ongoing project for over 2 years.
Now that the legislative part of the designation is complete, the fund raising begins for the cost of the project. The 1011th unit is now trying to raise the $4,000 needed for signage at each end of the stripe of highway.
It was reported that after the Saturday night banquet at our reunion in Emporia there had been around $1,200 raised toward the sign costs.
If 100 guys would give $40 each, this project would be paid for.
Unit members (or anyone) can contribute to the funding by enclosing a check made payable to "1011th Memorial Highway", in care of either the First Federal Savings and Loan at 6th and Myrtle, Independence, Ks., 67301 or Roger Wallingford at 2000 N. 8th. Street, in Independence, Ks. 67301
Your contributions are fully tax deductable and would be greatly appreciated!
