Emporia Veteran's Day Parade

Several hundred people lined Commercial Street in Emporia on Veteran's Day to show support for veteran's around the world.
Temperature were cool and it was damp, but that didn't seem to make much difference to the crowd.Posted by Picasa

EMPORIA UNIT HONORED BY THE EMPORIA GAZETTE

A supplemental section of the Emporia Gazette honored the 1011th Emporia unit as part of Veteran's week celebration as Emporia was noted by congress as the founding city of the National Veteran's Day holiday.

Four unit members were invited to the Gazette offices for an interview. They were Clayton Hobble, Roger Carson, Don Berrie and Larry Scott. The four spent about an hour with Bobbi Mylnar the reporter that wrote up the article. A good portion of the Veteran's recognition in the newspapers supplement was devoted to the story of the 1011th in Vietnam. Each of the four members added personal stories and many stories that will be recognized by all of the company members.

Don Berrie was also pictured with a Viet Cong flag which he brought back to the states on his return.

A special memorial section for Emporia deceased members included a picture and a paragraph on Mike Hubert the Emporia unit member killed in action in Vietnam.

So far we have not figured out how to incorporate the entire newspaper's supplement into this blog, but we are working on that. If you would like an original of the supplement as it appeared in the newspaper you can contact the Emporia Gazette as they usually have several copies on file. You need to contact them as soon as possible however, as there may not be many copies available.

1011TH MEMORIAL HIGHWAY IS A GO

Roger Wallingford has just notified the 1011th unit blog that the goal of $4,000 needed for the purchase and maintenance of the two highway signs for the 1011th Memorial Highway East of Independence has been met!

Everyone involved with this project has been very pleased with the participation of the unit members and also several other organizational sponsors.

Roger said a check is being sent to the State to get the signs made and installed which will wrap up the project.

A big thanks to all of you who donated to the project, and a special thanks to those involved in getting this project off the ground and following through to it's completion!
